Doctor Who, Meet Doctor Who!
Taken from the virtual pages of SF Scanner, here's another reason why I love Doctor Who:
Every year, the BBC holds the annual Children in Need telethon — an appeal to raise money for children's charities in the UK — and every year, a number of British celebrities and television shows take part, and the BBC's favorite and longest running sci-fi show, Doctor Who, often makes a guest appearance with a mini-episode bridging the last season with the forthcoming one.For the 2007 Children in Need telethon, Doctor Who did something a bit different and decided to have the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, run smack into the Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davidson. The resulting mini-episode is now up on YouTube for everyone to enjoy, and what it lacks in logic or plausibility, it really makes up for by dint of the Doctors' collective charm.
Interestingly enough, unlike the author of this post, I found Davidson to be one of my least favorite Doctors (with every single one of them who came after--up to Eccleston--being worse than the next). That could be due, however, to my firm belief that Tom Baker was the Doctor--a belief that has been challenged by the quality of Eccleston and Tennant's ability to inhabit that role.
In any event, this brief scene is everything that it's cracked up to be. It probably means nothing to those few infidels not devoted to Who, but it really is exceptionally touching if you are of the Who fen.
I am so looking forward to the Christmas special and Season 4.

With that said, I thought that Davidson did great alongside Tennant in Time Crash and his return as the Doctor has inspired me to check out some of the episodes he played the Doctor in during the 80’s. I put some 5th Doctor DVD’s on my Netflix queue and I look forward to seeing them. I actually don’t remember anything about the 5th Doctor as a child I didn’t like, I just seemed to loose interest after Tom Baker.
Peace,
James
Welcome to the blog! I also think that much of the blame for the descending quality of Doctor Who falls on the writers. It was as if the writers decided that they just didn't want to take their source material seriously. Not that Doctor Who needs to be War and Peace, but its writers should write within the very broad world that has been created and pay attention to what has been established previously. I know with a show that old it might be difficult, but c'mon, that is part of being a writer.
The "new" Who pulls this off better than any other previous incarnation. That's one of the reasons I'm so in love with it. Exceptional writing and great acting surrounding an interesting concept. It's just splendorifous!
I'd love to hear from you regarding the Peter Davidson episodes. Let me know how you enjoy them.
